At Zoorprendente, we find it infuriating that a shelter, which is supposed to provide safety, love, and protection to innocent dogs like Layla, has instead become a place where they face certain death. It is heart-wrenching to see poor pets end up in such shelters for reasons as ridiculous and inhumane as their inability to be controlled, becoming old, or families moving away. Recently, Layla, a young pit bull, was abandoned at a shelter by her family who felt that taking care of her was too much for them. Jackie O’Sullivan, co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, a shelter that rescues stray, abandoned and unfairly treated animals, confirmed this sad incident. The sight of Layla, who was clearly distressed and saddened by the abandonment, broke our hearts.
Jackie expressed how heartbroken she felt after reading the notes left by the dog’s previous owner. The owner mentioned having five children and two other dogs, but couldn’t handle the responsibility of all her pets. This left Jackie feeling very sad about the situation. Despite missing his family deeply, the dog still showed a very friendly attitude towards others.
As per the shelter’s Facebook post, Layla had a special fondness for the family’s two kids who were aged 2 and 7. However, when the family left Layla behind, she was completely lost and didn’t know what to do. According to Jackie, many dogs get anxious and uncomfortable in a shelter as they have lost everything they knew. Since Layla was very close to the children of the house, it wasn’t surprising that she felt uneasy in the shelter.
The stuffed toy was the only thing that could calm him down.
According to a post by one of the rescuers, Julie Carner, on Facebook, he would hold onto his stuffed animal tightly while walking down the street or strolling through the garden. That stuffed toy is now Layla’s only source of comfort and solace as she refuses to part with it even for a moment.
However, Layla’s situation was dire as she found herself in a shelter for potentially dangerous dogs (PPPs) and faced the risk of being put down if no one adopted her soon. The stuffed toy she had was no comfort as she was on the list several times for euthanasia. Fortunately, Rescue Dogs Rock NYC volunteers intervened and saved her from that high-kill shelter. She went to a foster home where she quickly adjusted and relaxed, spending hours playing in the garden. According to Jackie, Layla is an excellent dog who has regained her happy character, and they hope that she finds a permanent home soon.
She resumed playing and regained a sense of security.
It is heart-wrenching to witness the countless number of adorable dogs that get abandoned at shelters daily. However, Jackie assures us that despite this painful reality, Layla has been given a chance to find a loving home. It is amazing to think that this dog was nearly put down multiple times because people had mistaken her for being dangerous due to the negative reputation pit bulls have. Sadly, this is a common fate for many pit bulls that are unfairly stigmatized. Layla is hoping to find a family that will provide her with love and care, especially one with kids she can play and bond with, just like most dogs crave. She is ecstatic to prove her affectionate nature and is eagerly waiting to be adopted by a loving family.
The shelter is speaking up for Layla and all pit bulls who are being denied a chance at life due to their breed. They are tired of this injustice and want to make a change. Let’s join in and give more dogs like Layla the chance to be loved by a family and live a happy life.
