A man recently posted on Facebook announcing that he was giving up his dog and her nine puppies. The post caught the attention of a concerned community who wanted to ensure that the puppies and their mother received the care they desperately needed. Nana, the mother dog, had spent the last three years tied up outside her home in North Carolina. Sadly, her first two litters did not survive, but all nine puppies from her third and final litter did. As soon as they were born, her owner decided to give away all ten dogs. Upon learning about the situation, neighbors intervened and took the dogs. The Faithful Friends Animal Sanctuary (FFAS) soon heard about the family and contacted Mr. Bones Co. Rescue to provide assistance.
According to Elli Frank, the co-founder of Mr. Bones Co, they were sent photos of the poor living conditions and state of Nana. It was believed that she had moved her babies to a ditch to protect them from the hot July sun. This saddened the rescuers and led FFAS to take care of Nana and her puppies until they were old enough to be transferred to New York where Mr. Bones Co. is located. In the meantime, the rescuers visited Nana and her pups to build their confidence and facilitate their transfer. Nana had previously been bred twice but all of her babies except one had died, causing her to become a protective mother who suffered from neglect and loss. The rescuers wanted to ensure that Nana knew she was safe and would remain safe with them and FFAS.
Once familiarized with all the adorable pups, it was decided that they would be christened with names inspired by Peter Pan’s iconic characters. The litter now consists of Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, Tiger Lily, Wendy, John, Michael, Cubby, Liza, and Jane.
As time passed, the litter of puppies flourished and developed well. Come mid-September, Nana and her family were transported to New Jersey by Pilots N Paws and were then picked up by Mr. Bones Co. to be taken to New York. Despite the lengthy journey, the relief of finally reaching their destination was palpable as Nana and her pups found themselves in a secure and protected environment.
Upon their arrival, the rescuers immediately took each of the nine adorable Peter Pan puppies to their respective foster homes. Finally, it was Nana’s turn to be taken to her own foster home, and she felt a sense of security that she hasn’t experienced in quite some time. The drive to her new haven left her feeling a little tired, but she was comforted by the company of her rescuers.
During our frequent visits, she had developed a sense of trust towards us and had handed over her offspring to caring families who would provide them shelter until they found their forever homes, as explained by Frank. “She was aware that she had fulfilled her responsibility and had ultimately succeeded in safeguarding the futures of her babies.”
Nana and her adorable puppies have found loving foster homes where they are flourishing. In fact, Nana’s fosters are considering adopting her! It’s heartwarming to see the little ones growing stronger every day, and all those who helped rescue them couldn’t be happier. Although the journey to save this precious family was arduous, it’s incredibly gratifying to know they are now safe and content.
